     3. CREATING AUDIOVISUAL ACAPELLAS AND MUSICAL LOOPS

Open Sony Vegas 5 and set the ruler preferences to the bpm of the Live set (136.36) and set the ruler display format to ‘BEATS and MEASURES’. In Options make sure that ‘Quantise to frames’ is off.

Bring in the music video which is to be made into an acapella – here it is Coldcut featuring Lisa Stansfield ‘People hold on’ and also the acapella sections rendered from Ableton Live:

Go through the music video, cut out sections that correspond to the acapella parts and move them to the beginning of the track, solo the audio acapella you are dealing with as well as the tracks that the section of both audio and video of the music video are situated:

Trim the start of the AV loop so the first phrase stars accurately with the acapella then use time stretch (ctrl drag) to pull the AV loop in so when played the vocal parts match. Mute the audio from the music video and playback, if you are happy with the lip sync RENDER a region the length of the acapella part:

For use in VJamm we use a resolution 384x288 , 44.1k audio and an mjpeg compression (Pegasus in this case). Important things to note are that audio is interleaved every frame and that the ‘make openDML’ checkbox is unchecked. We also make mpg2 dvd pal versions of all the parts for use in the Pioneer dvj-x1.
Repeat the process with the other audio parts.

The process for making quantised musical AV loops is very similar, find the sections and stretch to time in the same manner. This is a quicker process as the waveforms are quite similar. Notice however that they are not identical, this is because of the warping done in live, one can cut the AV loop into smaller sections and time stretch parts to be more accurate but one should always take a view on how worthwhile this is by watching the video loop against the audio rendered from live to see how well they sync:
